Senior mental health

Caregivers, friends or family of someone 55 years old and older with emotional or behavioral issues who may endanger themselves or others can request a referral to the Senior Transitions program at LewisGale Regional Health System. Senior Transitions offers patients short-term stabilization in a calming, non-distracting inpatient setting.

We treat a variety of mental health conditions in seniors, including:

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Severe disorientation and memory impairment
  • Threatening thoughts or assaultive behaviors
  • Emotional issues occurring with substance use or medical issues

Admission or referral for mental health care at our facilities starts with an assessment through the emergency room at one of our four LewisGale Regional Health System hospitals—Salem, Alleghany, Montgomery and Pulaski—for patients who are in crisis.
